The recruit testing process consists of two parts; a general knowlege written examination and the Candidate Physical Ability Test
No prior training or experience in firefighting and/or emergency medical services is assumed of applicants taking the written examination. The exam is designed to assess cognitive and interpersonal abilities related to the following areas: reading, math, map reading, writing ability, situational & interpersonal skills, and mechanical & logical skills.
The Candidate Physical Ability Test is a timed practical exam used to test a candidate's physical ability to perform a job task related to firefighting.  CPAT is a physically demanding test that requires a candidate to use his or her physical, mental abilities and, in some cases, balance.  The CPAT involves eight sequential events that must be completed in 10 minutes 20 seconds.  The CPAT process is used in the selection of firefighters in participating fire agencies. An introductory video and a video of each individual event is available below.
